Remembering Former Academy Teacher Jane Hale Hovde

Jane HovdeJane Hovde, a former history, legal studies, and debate teacher at The Academy at Charlemont died October 2, 2023, at the age of 91. Jane began teaching at the Academy in 1988, when she moved to Plainfield, MA, after many years teaching at the secondary level in New York City. She enjoyed young people and was passionate about learning and creating equal opportunities for a high-quality education. Thus, the
founding values and goals of The Academy held great appeal to her. Jane became a colleague and friend of founders Eric and Dianne Grinnell, traveling with them to Sicily among other adventures. She remained a long-term supporter of The Academy even after moving on to teach at UMass Amherst in the mid-1990s, and retiring in 1997.
