Girls Wins League Sportsmanship Award As Academy Teams Conclude Fun Season

The Charlemont Varsity Girls’ did the school proud this year by winning the River Valley Athletic League’s first Sportsmanship Award. This award was a particular honor, as it is awarded by a vote of the league’s Athletic Directors and Coaches.

“The girls were very grateful,” Coach Abe Loomis said. “Their focus is fun and the spirit of the game, and it’s nice to know that that shines through.”

Overall it was a good soccer season for the Aardvarks. The Girls’ Varsity ended the season with a 3 – 3 – 1 record, which earned them a 4th place standing in the RVAL regular season. The Boys’ Varsity ended with a 3 – 5 – 1 record, which earned them a 6th place standing. Both teams had unfortunate losses in the first round of the tournament, but seniors from both teams came to morning meeting the following day proud of their teams’ achievements and feeling positive about the season.

The Girls Junior Varsity finished their season with a game against Stoneleigh Burnham School that demonstrated how much the team has progressed. Though The Academy lost, 1-0, there was great team play: lots of passing, communication on defense, and helpful words of encouragement from everyone.

The Boys’ Junior Varsity were an impressive team to watch this year. They combined great skill and athletic ability with solid team work, and finished the season 8 – 1 – 1.

The 2010 fall soccer season was the first for the River Valley Athletic League, which is composed of schools with small, competitive athletic programs in and around western Massachusetts. The league gives three awards each year to both the boys’ teams and the girls’ teams: winner of the league tournament; runner up in the tournament; and good sportsmanship throughout the season.
